Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin is the oldest and largest leading privately
owned publishing and distribution house of Arabic books and educational
materials in the Arab world. It is also the first and major Arabic
electronic multimedia producer company in the Arab world.
Since its inception in 1945, Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin's aspiration
was to develop the book in all its aspects to levels not previously
attained in this market. Intellectual property rights were a major
concern from the start, and Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin played a significant
role in fighting piracy throughout the Arab world. It is a dedicated
publishing house, which owns its own printing presses, and whose
employees are more than a hundred well trained and experienced people.
Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin distributes, annually, more than four million
books in different subjects: dictionaries, encyclopedias, cookbooks,
business linguistics,school books, literature, medicine, philosophy,
religion and children's books, etc.
In 1993, Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin established a sister company for
the import and distribution of English books to the K-12 school
market. In 1998, it became a major shareholder in a bookshop chain
that will expand and open new bookshops in different locations in
major cities of Lebanon and the Arab world.

In 2000, Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin published 55 new titles, bringing
the overall number of its publications to over 2100 titles.
Several of Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin's books have become record-breaking
best sellers. These include: "Al Mawrid English-Arabic dictionary",
and "Al Mawrid Arabic-English dictionary", both universally acknowledged
and considered as the most popular and authoritative Arabic bilingual
dictionaries; and "Alif Baa El Tabkh", and "Halwayat El Alam Fi
Baytik", the most popular Arabic cookery books in the world.
Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin is also a leading participant in Arab and
international bookfairs. In 2000, it participated in 41 bookfairs
in 15 countries. Its inventory of Awards of Excellence in these
fairs is unrivaled.

Since 1990, Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin has been a pioneer in electronic
publishing technologies, including computer software, CD-Rom, and
online services.
It published the first best selling Arabic electronic book (Al Mawrid
dictionary). Furthermore, it is the first publishing house to set
up a Web site on the Internet in 1994. In 1998, it helped produce
an electronic handheld Arabic Dictionary with Franklin.
Dar El Ilm Lilmalayin has made several contracts with European and
American publishers to acquire translation rights, and published
first-rate Arabic editions of a large number of titles.
